The Loovre

Matthew Armbrust, Conspicuous Flask
The job of an exhibit curator is not easy. The role is almost political in nature - deciding which artists to include in each exhibit, how and where to hang the submitted work. Curators must take into consideration whether each artist's work fits within the exhibit theme, if the work is the quality sought for that show, and how likely it is that the piece will sell.

Curators periodically run into the difficult decision of not including an artist in a show. Another challenge is how to display each piece (which essentially defines the show) in a way that both honors the piece and gives it sufficient spotlight that may result in a sale.

Interestingly, although some artists are insulted by having their work hung in the bathroom, it generates a large number of sales. Humorous, yes. However, consider this: not only is bathroom foot traffic high, but visitors take time to look at each piece while using the toilet.

To solve the issue of which art piece to hang in the bathroom, Confluence has decided to open a second gallery: The Loovre. The bathroom will function as a separate gallery space, and Confluence will ask artists to submit work specifically for that space. Each installation will coincide with the gallery's main exhibit.

In conjunction with the upcoming exhibit Raven, Confluence will hold a Grande Opening for The Loovre, featuring the work of local potter Matthew Armbrust with an installation called "Phases of the Moon."

The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 4-8pm. The show will run through May 31.
